I was quite surprised after researching the Sheffield family line. I had always thought we were just famous for cutlery made by some prominent Sheffield ancestors in England. Boy, was I wrong.
Lonnie Sheffield, Sr. (my father) is the son of John William Sheffield (grandfather) and Gertrude Francis Bell. When John William Sheffield was born in 1874 in Telfair, Georgia, his father, Rev. Simeon Augustus, was 19 and his mother, Maryann, was 17. In 1920, John Sheffield was 44 years old and lived in Mannings, Georgia with his wife, Winnie, and 7 children. On April 1, 1940, John W. Sheffield was 64 years old and lived in Burgamy, Georgia with his wife, Gertrude. He was married three times and had six sons and five daughters. He died on August 20, 1956, in Baldwin, Georgia, at the age of 82, and was buried in Cochran, Georgia.
When Rev. Simeon Augustus Sheffield (great grand father) was born on December 24, 1854, in Telfair, Georgia, his father, James, was 39 and his mother, Dinah, was 40. He married Maryann Elizabeth Thompson and they had six sons and five daughters together. He then married Roxie Bell on October 8, 1911. He died on January 1, 1936, in Vilula, Georgia, at the age of 81.
